July 30, 1839, rebelling slaves seized control of the slave ship Amistad. In 1913, the Second Balkan War ended. In 1975, former Teamsters union President Jimmy Hoffa disappeared; his remains have never been found.

July 31, 1964, the American space probe Ranger 7 transmitted pictures of the moon’s surface. In 1970, news anchor Chet Huntley retired from NBC News, ending broadcast of "The Huntley-Brinkley Report."

August 1, 1790, the first U.S. Census was completed, showing a population of nearly 4 million people. In 1966, Charles Joseph Whitman shot and killed 15 people at the University of Texas before police gunned him down.

August 2, 1876, frontiersman "Wild Bill" Hickok was shot and killed in a saloon. In 1961, the Beatles got their first regular gig as the house band of Liverpool’s Cavern Club.

August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, on his first voyage to the present-day Americas. In 1958, the nuclear-powered submarine Nautilus became the first vessel to cross the North Pole under water.

August 4, 1735, a jury acquitted John Peter Zenger of the New York Weekly Journal of seditious libel. In 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their home in Fall River, Mass. Lizzie Borden, Andrew Borden’s daughter from a previous marriage, was tried but acquitted of the crime.

August 5, 1861, the federal government levied an income tax for the first time. In 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe, 36, was found dead in her Los Angeles home. Her death was ruled a "probable suicide" from an overdose of sleeping pills.
