Tuning In ©2001 King Features Synd., Inc. Can't get to Broadway to see Tom Selleck in his theatrical debut role in "A Thousand Clowns"? Cheer up. The production will go on a 15-city tour across the country when the play closes in New York in late summer. Can't get in to see Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick doing their Tony-worthy turns in Mel Brooks' Broadway hit, "The Producers," any time soon? Good news. The PBS classic series "Great Performances" makes the waiting easier with the Aug. 5 airing (check local listings) of "Recording 'The Producer's': -- A Musical Romp with Mel Brooks." This is a delightful look at what happens when some of the world's most gifted entertainers gather to record the show's cast album. It's a production you'll want to tape. Also on Aug. 5, the eagerly awaited Hallmark Channel joins the wonderful world of cable television. True to its long tradition of assuring quality in everything that comes out under its name, the new Hallmark Channel marks its birth with "The Infinite Worlds of H.G. Wells," a brilliant six-hour movie event shown over three consecutive evenings. Tom Ward ("Quills") stars. Another Aug. 5 production of note is TNT's "James Dean," starring James Franco in a remarkable performance as the late actor, and Mark Rydell (who is also the film's producer and director) as movie mogul Jack Warner, the man who made Dean a star and came to love him as a son. *** DIAL TONES: Robert Urich ("Spenser: For Hire") joins NBC's fall comedy "Emeril," starring TV superchef Emeril Lagasse as (drumstick roll, please) a TV superchef. Urich -- whose Spenser character could whip up cordon bleu dishes twixt bouts with the bad guys -- can also don the toque with honor ...
