©2001 King Features Synd., Inc. Several years ago when I saw "The Man in the Moon" starring Laura Dern, there was a youngster in that flick named Reese Witherspoon (pictured below). She caught my fancy for two reasons. First, because she was a wonderful little actress, and secondly because in New Orleans where I grew up there were many Witherspoons, and she could possibly have been a relative ... Today she’s right up there with the best of actresses, and yes, she is related to some of those Witherspoons ... Reese’s latest is "Legally Blonde," wherein she plays Elle Woods, a natural blonde who sets out to prove that blondes are NOT DUMB! She’s fun, she’s sexy, she’s intelligent, and she’s good! So is the film, especially for those of us who were born blonde and have been trying to prove we "ain’t so dumb" for years. Angelina Jolie’s "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" is having far-reaching effects. Not only is it bringing in big bucks at the box office, but now Paramount Parks is planning to open a ride at Kings Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati that will use many of the props from the film, and other visual gadgets to thrill the riders. If this one is a success they will open at other parks around the country, hopefully with Angelina taking the first ride. Incidentally, the picture has already grossed more than $101 million. *** There are those who run and rerun the Bette Davis movie "All About Eve." There are even those who remember it well, and it is their all-time favorite flick. Well, now you can read "All About Eve" in a paperback edition from St. Martin’s Press. It’s filled with juicy gossip about what went on with La Davis, Celeste Holm, Anne Baxter, George Sanders — and don’t forget Marilyn Monroe in a bit part, but when she wiggles up those stairs you don’t forget her, even from behind. Aside to Hilda G. of El Paso, Texas. Yes. I quite agree "Cats & Dogs" is great fun for animal lovers, and in answer to your question, Mr. Tinkles is a real cat, but sometimes a puppet double is used. It looks exactly like the real thing, and was indeed a feat to accomplish. It took six experts to create the white Persian duplicate, and then six more experts to operate it when the cameras were rolling. Many of the other animals also have puppet doubles. *** Anne Heche and Ellen DeGeneres lived in a lovely Hancock Park mansion in L.A. and had a summer home at Ojai about 100 miles north. What with Miss H. turning girl and marrying boy, Ellen divested herself of the Ojai digs and has settled into a home in the Hollywood Hills. At this writing, Anne’s big problem is —whether as a bride she should wear white when she weds her cameraman fiance. *** BITS ‘N’ PIECES: They’re divorced, and he’s been with several ladies since, but believe me, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore are still friends ... Lotta Beverly Hills citizens reading Jackie Collins latest — "Hollywood Wives: The Next Generation" trying to find out if they recognize any of the characters, including themselves ... Don’t bet your money that Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin will ever get back together. Each time they try it ends up in a scream fest ... Didya know Jennifer Aniston’s real name is Anistonapoulos? ... And that Hilary Swank ("Boys Don’t Cry") is part Spanish and part Native American? ... Word round is Gwyneth Paltrow would like to do a Broadway play. And why not? Her mother, Blythe Danner, started out "treading the boards" ... Aside to Richard G. of Portland, Ore. Yes. Uma Thurman is one year older than husband Ethan Hawke. She’s 31; he’s 30.
