District 18 Student Wins Anti-Drug Essay Contest


Janet Nwaukoni (pictured above), a student at Community School District 18’s Public School 244 has won the top prize in the Eleventh Annual 5th Grade Drug Avoidance Essay Contest. The annual boroughwide contest is sponsored by the American Legion of Kings County and was facilitated by the Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention Specialists (SAPIS) at each school.

For her winning essay, which is reprinted on the right, Nwaukoni will receive a $100 U.S. savings bond.

Other district fifth grade honorees in the contest are Michael Thomas, Jr., P.S. 276, and Bianca Riboul, from P. S. 115, who were both named runner-ups and will each receive a $50 U.S. savings bond.

All student winners receive a certificate of participation from the American Legion, as well as letters of congratulations from President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, other elected officials, in addition to the National Commander of the American Legion and the Department of New York American Legion Commander.

All the winning students will be honored at a special awards ceremony on Sunday, May 6, at Victory Hall of Floyd Bennett American Legion Post 1060.

"I offer my congratulations to the winner and the two runners-up of the Drug Avoidance Essay Contest," said Community Superintendent Paula LeCompte Speed. "I applaud the efforts of all the students who participated in this contest as well as the staff members who coordinated the annual event."

"On behalf of the school board, I commend the writers of the prize winning essays and all those who entered this contest for sharing their hopes and dreams of a drug-free environment with the entire community," stated Julia James, President of the Community School Board.
