Courier Picks April "Students Of the Month"
By Neil S. Friedman The Canarsie Courier Students of the Month for April are P.S. 244 K/1 student David Straker and Isaac Bildersee I.S. 68 sixth grader Alrene Slater. In the submission for the 5-year-old elementary school student, his teacher, Debra Bullen wrote, "If there is a child who deserves recognition for being the best he could be, it would have to be David." Bullen also noted, "David is a child with Down Syndrome and is an excellent student...He has made tremendous progress since he came into my class in September...He participates in class, carries on conversations with his peers and writes on his own."
"The special thing about David," the teacher explained, "is that he tries very hard and I can see it in his work. Such determination is what teachers look for in all students. David makes teaching worthwhile..." Twelve-year-old Slater, who immigrated to the U.S. from St. Vincent and The Grenadines in the Caribbean less than two years ago, was cited by her sixth grade teacher, Deborah Holmes, as "a very intelligent young lady who excels in every area... "She meets every assignment head on, accepts the challenge and through her hard work becomes the victor as her efforts are successful." Slater maintains an 89 percent academic average that places her at the top of her class. Holmes also wrote that her student "is a compassionate child who has developed a rapport with her peers...that has gained the respect of those around her." Each Courier student of the month receives a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, a certificate and a T-shirt proclaiming their honor.
