Career Day May 8th Canarsie AWARE (Addiction Workers Alerted to Rehabilitation and Education) is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility that caters to addicted youths and their parents. The program has been in effect for the past 25 years and continues to flourish, with programs in GED, prevention, family service and mental health being part of the curriculum. On Tuesday, May 8th, Canarsie AWARE will add another achievement in its already burgeoning business: A Career Fair, held from 10 a.m. until noon, to further help people – mostly youth – in their aims for the future. "There will be roughly 15 to 20 agency representatives from different fields," said Vocational Counselor Robin Hightower. "They will represent careers like culinary arts, truck driving, child care, maintenance work, and computer training, as well as others," she said. Hightower also stated that the career day will not only serve the purpose of possible job placement and enrollment but it could also benefit people who are not specifically in the Canarsie AWARE program. "I would hope that this could be beneficial also as a career exploration for people who have been in the treatment to get into a starting point. They could be face to face with people from the agencies that can help them get somewhere," Hightower said. The career day not only deals with employment but also training and education. Canarsie AWARE is located at 1285 Rockaway Parkway (between Farragut Road and Foster Avenue). For more information, call Ms. Hightower at 257-3195.
