WORTH WATCHING THIS WEEK: On May 8, PBS will air "Islam: Empire of Faith." Ben Kingsley narrates this two-and-a-half-hour program, which marks the first time the history and culture of Islam has been shown on American prime time television. The program was shot throughout the Middle East and North Africa. It employs extensive historical re-enactments, an exposition of Islamic art, artifacts and architecture, and features interviews with scholars from around the world recounting the rise and importance of early Islamic civilization. (Check local listings.)

On May 11, ABC airs "Wingspan" — a beautifully told story of Paul and Linda McCartney’s early years together. The production features a series of candid conversations the couple had with their daughter Mary. Home movies, family photos and rare footage combine to provide a very personal insight into the lives of these very public people.

The NBC series "Just Shoot Me" airs its 100th episode and season finale on May 10. The guest stars for this momentous event are "Playboy" founder, Hugh Hefner, who arrives at the offices of "Blush" magazine to replace Jack Gallo (George Segal) as editor, along with the newly named "Playmate of the Year 2001" to take over as editorial director. (As I write this, her identity is still a secret, but all the wraps come off at air time.)

"Blonde," a four-hour miniseries based on the book about Marilyn Monroe by Joyce Carol Oates, airs May 13 and 16 with Poppy Montgomery playing Marilyn.

On May 13, ABC’s "The Wonderful World of Disney" will air "Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story" starring Ashley Rose Orr as Shirley from age 5-10, and Emily Hart (Melissa’s sister) as the teen-age Shirley.

SOAP SCRAPS: The CBS daytime series "The Bold and the Beautiful" will be offering a Spanish-language audio feed through SAP (Secondary Audio Program) technology starting later this month. This allows simultaneous Spanish language audio to be made available to more than 40 owned or affiliated CBS stations that have the SAP technology, including outlets in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco and Washington.
