Two-Year-Old And Man Caught In Car Fire Listed In "Serious" Condition

A 37-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy were listed in serious condition after they were found in a burning car on Paerdegat 12 last Sunday night, authorities said. According to witnesses, two young neighbors were responsible for rescuing the pair.

Fire Department spokesman David Billig said Engine Co. 257 and Ladder Co. 170 personnel were called at about 8 p.m. to douse the flames and, when they arrived, neighbors Tashaun Moses and Kevin Edwards had already gotten the man and boy out of the locked vehicle, with Edwards breaking a passenger-side window with a decoration he retrieved from his house. Witnesses said the vehicle had been sitting in a driveway when it suddenly caught fire.

Although one report said the victims were in stable condition, Billig said they were both taken to Brookdale Hospital and originally listed as "serious."

Captain Jeannine Jennette, commanding officer of the 69th Precinct, said police officers responded to the fire but investigation of its cause and follow-up is "now in the hands of fire marshals."
